What this checklist covers

A checklist for keeping good restaurant staff: a better first 30 days, fair and clear pay, schedules people can plan around, a team culture worth staying for, and a path to grow.

Who it’s for: Owners, general managers, chefs and supervisors who hire and schedule staff.

When to use it

  • Before you hire, so new people get a good first month.
  • When people keep leaving in their first weeks or after busy seasons.
  • Every few months, to check schedules, pay and recognition still work for your team.

How to use this checklist

  1. Work through one section at a time. The 20 free tasks are in 5 sections: Onboarding & First 30 Days; Compensation, Tip Transparency & Fair Pay; Shift Culture, Family Meal & Well-Being; Scheduling Sanity & Life-Work Balance; Career Progression & Recognition.
  2. Tick each task when it is done. Your progress is saved in this browser, and to your account if you sign in.
  3. Open “Show how” on any task for the steps and a practical tip.
  4. Print the checklist, or download the tasks as a CSV, to share with your team.
  5. Create a free account to see 5 more tasks.

Common questions

Why do restaurant staff quit?

Common reasons are unpredictable schedules, unclear pay or tips, a rough first few weeks, poor treatment on shift and no sign of moving up. Many of these can change without raising wages.

What does good onboarding look like?

A set first-day plan, a named person to shadow, clear written expectations, and a short check-in after the first week and the first month. New hires should never be left to work it out alone on a busy shift.

How do I know if retention is improving?

Track your turnover rate: people who left in the period divided by your average number of staff. Also watch how many new hires stay past 30 and 90 days.
